New Works at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Yayoi Kusama - A Wish for Human Happiness Calling from Beyond the Universe, 2020

Opening as a permanent exhibition on November 7th, 2025, a new addition to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao reflects a desire to share with the public the recent acquisitions for the Museum’s Collection, as well as the D. Daskalopoulos Collection Gift and the donation of the Al Held Foundation, and the long-term loan of 53 pieces from the Inge Rodenstock Collection.

Many works are being shown to the public for the first time, which makes it possible to forge new connections among artists, styles, and eras and bolsters the presence of essential figures and movements from the second half of the twentieth century, like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yves Klein, Jeff Koons, Antoni Tàpies, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol.

The addition of new artists like Hanne Darboven, Damien Hirst, Martin Kippenberger, and Robert Ryman expands the narrative of the Museum’s Collection.

Dynamic

This exhibition, which was designed to fully respect Frank Gehry’s original architecture, enhances the Museum’s commitment to creating a dynamic, plural story line that reflects the richness and complexity of contemporary art and furthers its contribution to the research and dissemination of art history from the 1950’s until today.

With the exception of galleries 301 and 304, which will keep the same display featuring the works Infinity Mirrored Room – A Wish for Human Happiness Calling from Beyond the Universe by Yayoi Kusama (2020) and Rising Sea by El Anatsui (2018), respectively, the remaining spaces are being redesigned to serve as independent multi-voice presentations that foster unusual dialogs and novel interpretations of the Collection.

Didaktika

As part of the Didaktika Project, the Museum designs educational spaces and programs to complement the exhibitions and offer on line and on site tools to aid appreciation and understanding of the works on view.

This new presentation from the Collection centres its educational space in the corridor of the third floor, and presents different types of collecting: private, public, and corporate collections. It will also pay homage to the people who were at the origin of the different collections present in this exhibition, i.e. Solomon R. Guggenheim, Dimitris Daskalopoulos, or Inge Rodenstock, thus enhancing the public’s experience and proposing new readings of their holdings.
